Fish and god POP

Today last day the famous festival of Ganesha which lasts 1.5 days depending on families, 5 days, 11 days or 13 days, Hindus will immerse the idols of plaster in the River. This festival is celebrated throughout India and particularly in the state of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Pune Nashik.

Throughout the festival of noise pollution is at its maximum and it is a huge uproar that invaded the streets terrorizing the animals try in vain to flee into the crannies of neighborhoods that can give them no chance of escape.

The first day of the festival families begin by bathing and buy a picture of their god for most POP (Plaster of Paris). Each day they will offer prayers and flowers to their god in plaster of Paris for 10 days on average. The last day they will accompany them to the river god and immerse throwing flowers still wrapped in plastic bags. The devotees shout "Ganapati Bappa Morya! Mangal Moorter mori "(Long live Ganesha! You who bring good luck back to us!). And what a return!

This festival has been put forward by the nationalist leader Lokmanya Tilak to give the Indians a meeting place under the British occupation in which they could share their concerns and reflect on the struggle against the British by gathering. At the time, only the clay used in the manufacture of idols were immersed in a water point near the place Housing devotees where they degrade naturally and quickly in an environmentally responsible. With urbanization and the important commercial interests clay has been replaced by the more portable POP and molding. However, plaster slower dissolution consequences disastrous flora and fauna. In addition, the paint used to decorate contain heavy metals like mercury and cadmium, the effects are devastating to which we must add the countless skin diseases that can be observed. The day after the festival you can see shoals of depleted fish floating on the water. None of the solutions proposed so far does not seem to impose traditions nor the return to traditional clay or use of reusable idol, the use biodegradable materials. The use of dip tanks has not been more effective in that city employees retire tanks idols that they can not demolish or burn them to redirect the stream. Awareness of an ecological imperative is urgent for India yet who has the most polluted rivers in the world.
